utopique is now closed
thank you for playing
Applications
Applications are open from the first to the second Saturday of each month. Apps are currently CLOSED and will remain so until further notice.
If you'd like to reserve, you are encouraged to do so, but a reserve isn't required to app, nor does it guarantee a place in the game. However, if you did reserve, be sure to app with the same journal so we know it's you! To submit an app, please read the app FAQ and then submit the form to this entry. Applications are screened, except for our sample apps, which can be read below for reference. If you have questions or have been waiting longer than a week, please email us at utopiquerp@gmail.
► What type of characters can I app?
We accept all canon characters and OCs. Canon AUs (such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts version of characters, or different comics AUs) at the same time are allowed. Fandom OCs are acceptable only given they have absolutely no relation to canon characters and events. For example, you may app a modern Hogwarts student who has no association to anyone from canon, or a tabletop game character. You may not app Harry Potter's distant cousin. We'll judge these types of characters on a case-by-case basis, but the rule of thumb is "if they could assume CR with or personal knowledge of canon castmates, they won't be allowed". CRAUs and AUs crafted by the player are not permitted.
► What about silent game protagonists?
We'll allow these provided a solid and consistent application. The exception is MMO protagonists (such as FFXIV's player character) and similar cases, where there is no single confirmed protagonist and multiples could cause confusion for castmates. Borderline cases will be judged case-by-case.
► Can I app a character with very little canon information?
You may, provided you can submit a thorough and consistent app that doesn't contradict the available canon. We'll follow the same case-by-case judging for minor characters as we do for silent protagonists: if you have a solid grasp on your idea of the character, and it's a reasonable extrapolation on what canon gives you, you're fine. If it seems far-fetched, against canon knowledge, or would cause problems for castmates, we'll revise or reject your app.
► What about new/untranslated canons?
We have no restrictions on "new" canons in general. However, your canon must have some kind of English translation. Fan translations are fine, but the mods need something to check your app against, and to have in case of any player disputes. Thank you!
► Are there any cast or character caps?
At this time, we allow 2 characters per player, 10 characters per cast, and a total of 150 characters in the game. These numbers may change in the future to suit the pace of the game and the needs of the players.
In the event that the game (or a cast) is at cap, accepted characters will go into a queue, which will be listed on the taken characters page. If you are placed in the queue and want to withdraw or hold your app for any reason, just reply to your acceptance and let us know!
the following casts are at or near cap
None!
► What if I'm apping a character I've played before?
If no one else has played them in your absence, you can comment with this reclaim form instead of your old application. Provided there are no OOC issues, you'll be automatically accepted. If someone else has picked up the character since you played them, however, they're the ones with a claim and you'll have to reapp normally.
► Do you need a list of powers/a wiki link for my canon?
If there's no section for it on the app, we don't require it! If you have concerns about your character's powers being worldbreaking, please come to us and we'll let you know. If you know your canon's info or translation is particularly hard to find, go ahead and link it under the "canon" section, or we'll ask you while we're processing. Thank you!

SAMPLE APP.
Player Name: Katy
Age: 25
Preferred Contact:
Existing Characters: N/A.
IC
Character Name: Estinien
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: During Heavensward (quest).
About:
That's the quote that sums up Estinien. He's blunt, bordering on rude often, and doesn't mince words. He doesn't tread carefully with words, and says what's on his mind. He's hard to get along with, and even harder to get close to—Aymeric actually tried to when they were young, but it was only because of a life-threatening situation that Estinien finally even interacted with him.
Despite how rude and uncaring he can be, Estinien is... still rude, but definitely caring. He has two goals—slay Nidhogg, protect Ishgard. Luckily for him, they follow the same path. And for a long time, Estinien fully believed that all dragons were dangerous and under Nidhogg's command; he was trained to kill them, no matter what, and he didn't take to suggestions otherwise easily.
But in the end, he was presented with solid proof and he sought out the truth himself. When he got the answer—that man and dragon once lived together in peace, and that it was man who initially wronged the dragons—he accepted it.
However, his hatred for Nidhogg was a personal thing. Nidhogg himself slaughtered Estinien's family and since then, Estinien has been overwhelmed by his own rage. During the dragoon job quests, Nidhogg manipulates Estinien's anger and thoughts by telling him about Alberic's "cowardice." That's the first time Estinien is possessed (to an extent) by Nidhogg, and afterwards his emotions stabilise to a point where he can stubbornly keep the dragon out of his mind.
That is, until Nidhogg is slain, Thordan defeated and the second Eye is recovered. Estinien thinks of something comforting—now that the war is over, he can dispose of the Eyes and rest. Nidhogg's shade thinks otherwise, and attacks him when his defenses are lowered... and fully takes over his body. Later, Estinien manages to hold back Nidhogg through his strength of will, long enough to be saved. Because if there's one thing Estinien has in spades, it's stubbornness. He was strong enough to reclaim his own body for a time, and was fully willing to die if it meant finishing off Nidhogg.
While he was taken by Nidhogg, Estinien was semi-conscious. Enough for him to fully realise how similar the two of them were; both were consumed by hatred and anger, to the point where it was just an ever-lasting storm within them. Estinien realised that the only thing that separated them was that while Estinien had friends and mentors to comfort and scold him, keeping him on the proper path, Nidhogg had no one. In the end, he understood Nidhogg just as well as he understood himself, and his angry quest died with the dragon.
At the canon point he's being taken from, Estinien is calm after defeating Thordan, but has yet to go through the possession. However, he still knows that Nidhogg and himself are similar—he's just yet to experience it so explosively.
Aside from being angry, which is usually saved for those who waste his time (or dragons), Estinien is snarky and blunt. He doesn't mince words, he doesn't really think before acting and speaking, and while he has a lot of confidence and pride, he's not above admitting when he's wrong. He knows how to say thank you, it just might be awhile before he does it. Unlike many Tall, Dark and Grumpy characters, he's fully willing to call someone his friend—again, it just might take him awhile to accept you as a friend to begin with.
He also hates socialising, especially parties, and is too lazy to cut his hair. In the end, he's no good with politics or comforting people—he has very few leadership qualities, and while he's a role model for other dragoons, it's questionable that he's a very good one—and, in his words, all he knows is how to fight. And while he's a grumpy knight, he's still a knight down to his core, and will protect those who need him.
Inventory:
‣ His lance.
‣ A linkpearl that he won't be able to use for much, probably.
Feature Type: He'll be a polar bear so his features will be roundish ears (white), a short fluffy tail (white), and sharpened/longer canines.
What are your plans with this character? He really needs a break from everything before everyone goes back to shit for him, and then he'll need a break from that if I ever canon update him, so I feel like this is the best place for it! He'll be able to settle in a sense, but will still have things to do. I chose his canonpoint so that he won't be as frustrated and angry as he would be to get back to Ishgard. But really, I'm just excited to give him cute ears and indulge in making him suffer as a bear...........

▷ ACCEPTED
Your character has been placed in Holly alliance, in room 202!
While we're sure you're excited to start playing, there's a few things we need you to do to get settled. First, make sure you're familiar with the game's rules and other info. Next, please submit join requests to both the main comm and ooc comm.
Upon receiving acceptance to the OOC comm, please add (or update) your comment to the player contact directory. You'll also need to put a stats/permissions post and an IC inbox post in your character's journal. You can use the codes we've provided on the taken characters page, or make your own. Once you've done all three things, comment to the taken characters page with the form provided. We will not provide main comm access until you've submitted the taken list form.
Thank you very much for bearing with the setup. We're glad to have you in Arden Grove!◁
